#ElectrifyZerega Community Action Challenge Kick-Off

The #ElectrifyZerega Task Force (#EZTF) aims to coordinate, convene and document community engagements to expedite Medium Duty/Heavy Duty (MD/HD) fleet electrification in the Zerega Avenue Industrial Business Zone (Z-IBZ).

Goals:

  • stimulate public/private investment

  • create workforce development opportunities

  • alleviate acute community health burdens

The Zerega Avenue Industrial Business Zone (Z-IBC) in the Bronx, New York, specifically in Castle Hill, ranks in the 87th national percentile for Particulate Matter, 90th for cancer risks, and 91st for hazardous waste proximity, with over 38% of residents classified as low income.

About this Task Force:

#EZTF is a multi-member volunteer team inspired by the AEG and Northeast Clean Energy Council (NECEC) Clean Transportation Summit held in Brooklyn on November 16, 2023 where 128 public and private leaders were challenged to align on a critical obstacle preventing the electrification of MD/HD fleets within cities to achieve climate, health and equity commitments.

AEG/NECEC Northeast Clean Transportation Summit

"Regarding Northeast/Regional Fleet Electrification, a critical obstacle to collectively overcome in the next 12 months is __________."

States in the Northeast have set aggressive goals to achieve net zero emissions and high levels of clean energy. With goals established, the challenge now is to determine the best pathways to achieving these goals. It will require a huge amount of new infrastructure deployment as well as retrofitting existing infrastructure which was designed for a different era.

In this event we will focus on the challenges in planning, designing, deploying and paying for upgrades to the region’s transportation system.

In partnership with the Advanced Energy Group, NECEC will convene leaders from the public and private sectors across the Northeast to share lessons learned, pain points and successes to build consensus on how we can collaborate to accelerate the attainment of the States’ goals.

An important aspect of the discussion will be how we incorporate municipal level strategy into the regional planning process, to ensure that this transition is equitable.

Objectives:

  1. Educate regulators, utilities and other stakeholders to develop new markets for the greater good

  2. Learn how innovative approaches using new business models or new technology have shown promising results

  3. Develop a modernized transportation system that is affordable, just, equitable, and reliable

NECEC/AEG Northeast Regional Alignment Summit On Transportation and Mobility

About

The transportation sector accounts for 42% of the greenhouse gas emissions in the Northeast U.S., making it the single largest contributor to the region's carbon footprint. While cleaning up the transportation sector is a priority for states in the Northeast, it will require a massive amount of new infrastructure deployment and extensive retrofits to existing infrastructure in order to transform it. NECEC and AEG will convene leaders from the public and private sectors across the Northeast to share lessons learned, pain points and successes to build consensus on how we can wrap our arms around the enormous task of building a clean transportation sector. In particular we will look at the recent plans made by all states for public EV charging stations on Interstate highways and what infrastructure (charging and other technologies) is needed for both public and private entities and heavy-duty electric truck fleets.

We also will delve into the community level perspective to assess how well regional plans address local needs and how to ensure this mass transition is done equitably.
