In this edition of the AEG Podcast, Penni McLean-Conner, Chief Customer Officer and Senior Vice President of Customer Group at Eversource Energy, joined Boston Advanced Energy (BAE) to discuss several important topics facing the Boston energy community. HG Chissell, Founder and CEO of Advanced Energy Group, talked with Penni about three main topics (1) Eversource’s EV Make Ready Program, (2) Leadership in the energy industry, and (3) Customers and the energy transformation.
Penni recently joined BAE as a Discussion Leader for Q1 2018 on the topic of Resiliency, Critical Infrastructure, and Microgrids. At the stakeholder breakfast, Penni touched on the relentless nor’easters that hit the Boston area in early 2018 and Eversource’s commitment to restoring power while maintaining two-way communication with customers. Penni noted that “customers don’t like being left in the dark,” and shared some anecdotes from her recent experience that highlighted the importance of customer engagement during extreme events and outages.
Eversource’s Electric Vehicle Make Ready Program is a $45 million capital investment by Eversource to create over 4,000 charging stations across the commonwealth. Penni noted that the key feature to this program is how it addresses the cost barrier to entry for charging stations by reducing the customer’s needed capital investment by about 10x. Penni highlighted her enthusiasm for this program because it addresses the transportations sector, which is the sector that has growing carbon emissions in the commonwealth.
Penni’s book, Profiles in Excellence: Utility Chief Customer Officers, profiles eight all-star Chief Customer Officers and in this podcast Penni notes the common thread of building customer focused cultures and team building. Of particular note in the podcast is Penni and HG’s conversation on diversity and inclusive corporate environments. Marilyn Caselli, Chief Customer Officer of Con Edison, is mentioned for her passion for creating an inclusive workforce, which is so critical because as she states: “we truly reflect the mosaic of the customers we serve”.
Lastly, Penni and HG talk about the active role consumers are having on the energy transformation. Eversource’s customers attended many town hall meetings in 2017 as part of the rate case in coordination with the Department of Public Utilities. In those sessions, customers demonstrated their passion for access to Distributed Energy Resources, a reliable grid, and access to energy information.
